Minelab Sovereign GT with 10" coil - about $700. Good in dry and wet sand.

Whites Beachhunter 300 ID with 12 " coil - about $700. Good in dry and wet sand, and also good in water up to 25 feet.

Both have discrimination, and all metal mode, and both can be hip mounted - which takes weight and stress off your arms.

my advice, spend the money and get a top model machine. excal, cz-20 or 21, there are others. to hunt the water or wet sand you need the best. they will pay for themselves, time and time again. if you buy a lesser machine you will only end up buying the better machine later. bite the bullet now and start finding the better finds from the start. you won't regret it. just my advice, hope it helped? hh jeff

A good detector Whites or Minelab. A long handle sand scoop and a pair of water shoes. Plus if you may want a wet suit.....Matt

Welcome to TN.... :icon_thumright:

Are you sure your not going to hunt in the water? There is more jewelry to be found in the water then anywhere else at the beach. GuerillaBill gave you two of the best, but you might want to also consider the Minelab Excalibur 1000, you can hunt in the water with it as well as the wet sand, and it transmits 17 different frequencies simultaneously, ranging from 1.5 to 25.5 kHz in 1.5 kHz increments and it nulls on iron which is a big advantage on the beaches with all those tiny pieces of iron................It is the waterproofed version of the Sovereign...........

Good luck and good hunting............. :icon_thumright:

Treasure Hunter is right. Bite the bullet and get the water version of the GT, the Excal 1000.

Thanks for ALL the great ideas. I guess i will start saving my pennies now to get one that likes the water and likes to find gold:) Then I will sell mine which is better for dry sand and land.

Happy hunting everyone!

I think I will bite the bullet. I am looking at the minelab excalibur 1000 that was suggested. I think I would enjoy going into the water with it.

It is so nice to have this kind of help, thanks!

If you get the Excalibur, be sure to keep the box and the warranty card handy.

Bought it new, and have had it in the Minelab repair center twice for a total of 90 days . . .

Works great now, though.

front-up! :headbang:

Sandsifter, where in Florida are you located?

Bill seems your luck runs both end of the spectrum, I remember all the great finds you pull out of the water this year with your detectors, and I remember when you had so much trouble with your new Excal II, I would have been just as frustrated as you were with the problems you had with your Excal.....

Of the 3 Excals I have owned, all of them I bought used. (I sold one for $75 less then I paid for it after using it for 18 months, and that doesn't take into consideration all the gold it found.) There has only been a total of 2 trips to the repair shop on just one of the units. Cost of the repairs still did not push the price of the unit to full price if I bought it new. It cost me $140 total for the repairs including shipping, and some of the repairs were extras I asked for. (Replaced the Decal around the controls.)

I personally will not buy an Excal detector new now, you lose too much value in deprecation, their warranty is only good for a year now, and they currently no longer sell the extended warranty. I would rather buy used, save the money and let someone else lose the deprecation value. All of my excals are the older Blue Headphone style, never owned the New Excal II, if I find one used at a good price I would buy it, but I am in no hurry or have a big interest at this time to get the new Excal.

I have bought 2 new detectors, the BHID that I traded off, and my non-waterproofed Sovereigh GT, the other 7 detectors that I have owned (sold 3, currently own 6 detectors) were all bought used and everyone arrived in perfect working order.

My latest Excal I bought used off a board for $475. I bought a used WOT coil for it for $80 plus shipping, splice for the WOT $20, added a custom built straight shaft for $25, and it is my primary water detector, with another Stock Excal (Looking for another used WOT coil for it) and a waterproofed Sovereign GT with WOT as backups. I have $600 in this one now and a new Excal is $1200. I bet I could sell it a couple years from now and lose almost none of the money I have in it.
