Here's an IHP I dug in the 90s. It had a gob of corrosion on the last digit in the date and for years I thought it was an 1870. Then I worked on the date and at times I thought it was a 76 or 78 but could never be sure until I discovered Andres pencils. I worked on it with the pencil, going slow and scraping off a bit at a time and then checking until I got this result. It is clearly 1873. If the gob of corrosion had been like the one on the cheek, I never would have gotten it. I obviously had to work on it because it could have been a 7.
