I believe it's an old ferrite core inductor (possibly from a magnito or old radio).

Your item is an Steel Laminate Core fixed value Inductor...or inductance coil. It can't be a transformer because it only has one wire on each end of the coil...with no center tap. A transformer would have to have (three or four wires). Likely used in an audio circuit.

Maybe a doorbell transformer or something from Crocker-Wheeler, an old fan company

All of the above are good answers, but I'm hoping it was from an old quack medicine shock therapy contraption... which really isn't very likely, it's just a fun application for these.
