This is one more item that was found in the estate auction. On the front is the inscription "54th Massachusetts Regiment, Troop B 112, Free Negro Volunteers." The reverse has the inscription, "U.S.C.T., Corps d' Afique, Every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword." Apparently it's an I.D. tag, but what is the time period?? Thanks for any help in Identification!!

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but the 54th Massachusetts was one of, if not the first regiment of colored soldiers during the civil war (so Civil War period to answer your question). The movie "Glory" was based on the 54th Massachusetts. I can not tell you more about the inscriptions. I would bet you have something there very collectable and valuable.
