Re: ship part, what is it??????

Looks Viking to me ;)

Seriously, never start a question with an assumption unless you can add the detail. Why do you assume its a ship part rather than any other type of iron part?

The question should be what is it? or add the detail?

What you have done is a leading question, you have tainted peoples thinking & stiffled innovation.

Or you can add the Facts which builds a picture allowing us to tailor our answer.

Sorry if this seems like teaching you to suck eggs (English expression) but the more you help us the better we can help you.

We are a knowledgable (opinionated) bunch & truely wish to help you. We are not after your treasure spot (not worth the flight for me), just more info?

My first thought would be it's a stump-anvil. Pounded into a stump to use it for peening scythes and such in the field or working on tools at a logging site.

Form follows function. Flat on top. Spike on one end. Stop on other end. Stop allows space underneath to pry it out of the stump when you're done. If you've ever used a splitting wedge in a stump as a make-shift anvil you can appreciate the removal design elements.

Could well be part of a rat trap, but it would work GREAT as a stump-anvil. Now, is this something a ship's Chippie used ashore to make repairs or a blacksmith used to repair swords and armor, that I can't say. Those details are why archeologists hate us. Once it's removed from the ground it is lost to accurate dating unless it is similar to known & previously dated items.

Dad schlepped us to every museum and interpretive historic site he could find (and was a packrat - like me). This was before Nintendo, cellphones or IP3s so I had to pay attention. :D

Archeologists are useless unless they thought of it themselves. Best dig it yourself, write your own paper & publish it so they can read it. Thats what I'm doing.

some archies sit around waiting for your "finds" to be brought to them to ID ---then they claim them citing "historical importance" dry gluching you in the process--- not all of them do but some of them do. thats why some folks really dislike em.---- Ivan
