Boy, that is super well made - even has decorative spliced pieces at four points around the rim. Some kind of game?

The vibe I'm getting is a bowl for nuts and the wood that holds the nut crackers is missing. May have been mounted on the dowels.

I'm going to guess it's a round sewing box / container, similar to this one, spools of yarn would go on the dowel rods, the buttons, needles sewing machine parts, stuff like that may explain all the wear marks? Maybe the circular wear unclemac noticed is were the bowl would sit? Just a guess......is the bottom painted green or is that what's left of old felt?

i had a vibe that it was sewing/yarn related too, could be why I thought it was familiar.
