It isn't magnetic and don't appear to be plated. The item is .17 inches long and .3 inches in diameter. The hole in the base is about .15 inch diameter .4 in depth and the narrows to a small hole the size of a paper clip and out the tip.
This was found in a box kept by a WWII veteran. It was with his dog tags, spent bullets a Invasion pamplet for Papua New Guinea and other items. I don't know if this item has any connection to his military service but everything else in the box was.

Thanks for any help.

Looks an awful lot like a brass air conditioning piston for a metering device. Couldn't tell you what brand but it is, but not a Goodman nor Carrier brand.

Not quite sure either Tom could possibly be a Fourragère , there are many different types that were worn in the military at the end of the cord and were mostly just there to help them hang straight on the uniform. You may check some of them out under the branch the Vet was enlisted in and go from there. Hope this could help a little i may be completely off base with this as it is really hard to say with the image , and even may have been a foreign item of sorts.
