I picked this up at a barn sale...payed $1.00 for it. The man that sold it to me thought it might have been used for darning...I sure didnt have a clue to what you would darn with a nine inch thing like this other than rope. It is made out out bone or a real light pourous stone. I have shown it around and some people say indian artifact, others say sharpening stone. I have seen a sharpening stone similar but it had flatten sides and was heavy and made out of a metalic material...Anyone got a opinion?

I cant think of a thing that you would darn that needed a darning stone in that shape....unless it was for glove making. Most are egg shaped or mushroomed ,made of bone, stone or wood that would fit into the heel of a sock to provide the extra firmness for repairing .......I think its used for something else.

The Only Thing It Reminds Me Of, Is A Spindal Used In Making And Repairing Fish Nets By Hand, Some Of The Old Timers Still Use Them Here Along The Coast. Just A Shot In The Dark. trk5capt...

Looks like a tool used in tightening the weft when making a rug by hand, old timey stuff, can't think of the name.

I think you are referring to weft puller, but that has a hole in it ...kind of like a toothbrush handle with a slit in it to pass the fabric through.Looks like a large wooden needle.
