Hello friends...

I dug this in what appreared to be a TOC to '40's dump. It is not threaded but has two 'exhaust' slots along the edge possibly for steam release? Could it be a gas cap?

Before I scrolled down and saw trk5capt's post, I thought, "part of a lamp".

Seeing the pictures he posted makes me even more inclined to that view.
