It is a reed from an old air pump organ.

Google: Harmonium... patented 1840... out of style early 1900s.

I am quite the thinkner myself!

I am surprised that you didn't know that. You are really good at the ID game. I found these reeds at several sites, and could not figure out what they were for the longest time, then one of the old timers ID'd it for me. Now I see these reeds all of the time. They are a good indicator that you are in the "right" place to find silver coins.

I have only found 2 Barber dimes in NC (out of 100+ silver coins), they are rare around here. The two sites that gave up Barbers have absolutely no signals left because I (we) dug all of them, in hopes that another Barber was hiding in the trash.

You might live in an area with more history than NC (Northeast), so Barbers might be more common for you, but if it were me, I would go to where I found the reed and Barber, and I would dig every signal that was not iron... actually, I would be on the way there right now... but that's just the way I roll!

Best of luck to you, and I look forward to seeing some good finds from you soon!
