Almost looks like some sort of "Hard Times" token. Would have to see the other side and cleaned up more.

Thanks, Hogge. I'll re-post asap.

It looks like a 'trade token,' and after cleaning, hopefully we'll be able to ID the company/business. Neat find :) Breezie

If that hand is average size, the object is about 40 mm in diameter, bigger than any token I'm aware of--and larger than an IKE dollar. so Bigtoot's suggestion is 'thinking outside the box' ; I like that.
Don.....

I didn't realize it was that big; hopefully the OP will give us the exact diameter. :) Breezie

It is slighlty bigger than this 1820 Ireland One Penny token. Also, a quarter for scale.

It is about 35-36mm.

Thanks for your help guys and gals. My Attempt at cleaning it only made it worse... as you can see. :BangHead:

I think I've found it.... possibly.

1854 New Brunswick One Penny Currency | eBay

The end of the boat seems to match up and I can sort of make the word "currency" out.

Now, to find out if this diameter matches up...

That was the first coin I looked at just minutes after your first post! But in your picture up top it looks like an out of place "O" at about the 4 o'clock position so I ruled it out. If it is a NB (which I do think it is), had you posted this pic sooner it would have been solved a long time ago.

Edit: I now see it was the C I was seeing, but the top pic threw me off because it makes the ship look like it extends closer to the edge of the coin... another thing that seemed not to match. The 2nd pic posted makes it easy.

Right on IP! Thank you.

I just found a NB half-penny token last week... I never even knew this one existed. I need to pick up a Canadian token catalogue.

Gio,
I like your call.
The diameter in my book (visual, not stated) is 34 mm; close enough. The mintage was 432k, and it differs from the 1 penny token by the word "currency' instead of 'token'. Queen Victoria's image with her appropriate legend would be on the obverse of both pieces.
Don..
