Does Bakelite have the grayish parallel lines

I always thought ivory had this or a cross hatched pattern........but I guess it's my bad you learn something everyday

The material it is made of could be alabaster?

I think its a Japanese Netsuke. You can test if its plastic by heating up a pin very hot and then carefully touching it to the piece (**somewhere inconspicuous, you don't want to damage it**). If its plastic the pin will melt it.

Test it with 409 no color change on swab

The best test is to run the piece under hot tap water.
If it smells a little like your old high school chemistry lab (formaldehyde), it's Bakelite.
If it smells like vicks vapo-rub (camphor), it's Celluloid.
If it smells like burnt milk, it's Galalith (1920's).
If it smells clean, or like nothing at all, it's lucite, acrylic, or Lord knows what.
