Just for curiosity sake, what are the inside dimensions of the drawer?

7 1/2 inches in length by 5 1/2 width tapering down to 4 inches

So the drawer is tapered to the back and the box matches?
It looks like the front of the inside of the drawer is also tapered down into the drawer?
Does the back of the box have a back on it or is it also open?

I really don't have any idea what it may have been used for, but it is a very nice piece.

Yes it tapers down to match box and drawer has a back...... I thought you were talking about the edges of bottom of drawer
