Maybe no-one knows what it is, and that's why they don't answer?
I see from your profile that you post A LOT of "what is this?" questions. Maybe you've tired folks out?

I know that TNet is populated with incredibly helpful people, and they will help you if they can.
I can't help ID your item, but maybe I can help you understand why you haven't gotten a response.

Good luck.

That cannon ball part was a kick butt find, where ever it is on here...

I hadn't seen the previous post. Anyway, due to the lack of oxidation in the iron, I doubt its more than 50 years old, at best. The CW iron we find is really rough.

Don't know why but it reminds me as a broken part of a gate or door latch. Or I could be totally wrong and it's a UFO aka Unidentifiable Found Object.....

Yeah, I'm pretty new to metal detecting and to this forum, and I ask a lot of questions too. Just this week I reposted about a find that's been killing me, because I can't figure it out. And I was really hopeful someone here could help out - as they almost always do - but no responses. And then I remembered, HEY NOBODY IS PAYING THESE PEOPLE TO READ MY POSTS AND FIGURE OUT MY INSIGNIFICANT FINDS. Nobody has a duty. We're all doing this because we love it, but at the same time we're doing a Google Image search trying to help someone figure something out, our wives are giving us sideways looks because we haven't cut the grass, and there's 38 emails to respond to for work, and I haven't filed last year's taxes yet, and my son says he wants a new PS5, and my old truck needs a new alternator, and I gotta pressure-wash the house, and OH WAIT, I have 12 texts from good friends that I haven't answered yet.

Long story short, I'm grateful for the community here, the help that I get, and to be able to share in the love of this hobby.

No whining.

15 year old piece off something?

65 year old piece off something?

165 year old piece off something?

Really - does it change much? Things have had lots of pieces since the Industrial Revolution. And more modern things tend to have more parts.

It does look like some type of latch piece but without a patent date or patent number or anything else that would give us a definite starting place to research it. It will probably go un-identified unless someone used that piece in their work over the years and recognizes it as a piece they know.

Obviously it's a UIJ, Unidentifiable Iron Junk. There are tons and tons of old steel or iron junk in the ground, and most of it is just junk that nobody cares about. I gotta agree with Brian here, you need to do more of your own research rather than ask about every piece of junk you dig up. If it looks like junk it IS junk. Regarding this item, as smokey says, it has to be fairly modern by the non corroded condition, you have to learn to figure this out for yourself. I am glad to see you are no longer asking who owned these things and unanswerable questions like you once did but when I find something like the posted item it goes right in the trash can along with the broken toy cars, rusted out pocket knives, broken tools and most of the other junk I dig up. We all dig more junk than treasure, it's the nature of the game.

Both threads merged, you just posted original post yesterday afternoon, it hadn't even been 8 hours.
