ya I know...prolly should post this in general but I want opinions from the,"what is it"research community and not necessarily others. As you research veterans know I have been hucking in my 2 cents with regularity whether I am an expert in the field or not.Is this appropriate? My view and reasons are that perhaps a novice researcher like myself could see an object with,"fresh"perspective and perhaps open a new direction for original poster to research.
I would hate to think other novices like me would be afraid to get in the mix.Sure I'm wrong alot,but I also have been right as my skills develop.My observations are these;
A)when the herd tacks right,I often go left...to open new possibilities.
B)I try to remember to post my opinions as just that...opinions...guesses.
C)I try to find images to support my views.
D)If I truly have nothing to add...I dont...instead learn from the veterans

I would like to hear if this is historically an accepted approach? What can a novice like myself do to be more helpful?I am particularly thick skinned....let er rip.But know others like myself would surely like to pitch in also, and this thread is also for them.

We,the B team are in awe of the varied knoweledge base here and appreciate any guidance from the A team.

thx...pat

Absolutly keep doin what you do.Everybody is welcome here.
As I have mentioned in other posts and may be what has warranted your post is....it is a peave of MINE,when somebody continually mis-leads somebody, and shouts the "origin",of an item before anything is said about provenance...that is not fair to the person asking the question or the other people that may be seeing the post without knowing better. Also providing the "era",of an item by the amount or type of rust on an item....this is no way to accurately date any iron object. Many variables come into play, ground type, ground moisture soil composition and mineral type, etc.
nobody here is perfect but I think we all that attempt to provide "good",info owe it to not only those who ask,but those who may look at the posts years down the road our best shot.Always keep in mind that our Posts here at T-Net are what pop up in the top five of nearly any item you Google Search. There are an infinite number of other forums where it is obvious its just a bunch of off the wall guess',and if you notice....very few response's and little activity...now compare that to here......see?

I totally agree with you kuger. But it's also the job of all of us to not let others rip apart someone else's post especially if it was a well thought out guess.

........again....there is not even a need to be mentioning Confed or Union anything until that is either asked or warranted.....I guarantee if I was into posting my found items(which I am not) or was into playing games(which I am not),I could post the the most mindblowing "Confederate",collection you have ever seen, using some peoples "theory"....and I have never hunted within 3,000 miles of any C.W. battle.I dont see how Rob ripped anybody,I will say many of us myself largely included dont sugar coat things...call a spade a spade....kind of like I.D ing things...when the BS meter goes off,it will be mentioned....imho

Hey Pat, I think your approach is a good one; offering ideas as a possibility rather than declaring any certainty, unless you really are, with supporting evidence as you mentioned. And sometimes any one of could notice a particular element of an item that others have missed. An old member, Monty, claimed to have a 4% accuracy rate, but he was still an invaluable part of the "team"... We all know different stuff!
Importantly I've noted your good natured attitude, which (to me) makes up for a few wacky ideas, especially since I'm prone to such things myself. Personally I try not to bash far fetched ideas, but may post an explanation of why one can't be right, hopefully preventing someone from from spending research time in the wrong direction.
Recently I've noticed less of the unsupported "I don't know what it is, but it's Definately 18th century" type answers, from anyone in this forum, which is good. We can all be wrong, we can all be right. We can all learn.
Anyway, keep doing what you're doing, it's all good.

Keep doing what you are doing and its OK to guess. Never be afraid to post but expect to have differences of opinion. The What Is It forum is probably the only forum where we can disagree or call a fake when we see it.

There is no easy way to tell someone they are wrong but when I am wrong someone will surely tell me. Getting the correct ID is of utmost importance as the threads are looked upon as reference..

bigfoot1,
I think we're all here to learn, educate and sometimes use our 'bragging rights'; all in good spirit.
If you wish to 'play it safe' then preface your comments with IMO or IMHO--then write what you want.
Many times I'm first 'in the arena' with a response, only to get stepped on and corrected. But I learn from the subsequent responses of others--so I take it as a Win-Win-Win situation; for the original poster, myself and the others reading the thread.
Don....

I been a member here for several years but I'm a newbie to IDing items on here, only in the last year or so, but it's a passion to know "what it is" that I've had for a long time, most of my life in fact.

I've spend many minutes to sometime a few hours researching trying to ID some of the items that get posted in this section and in other sections of Treasurenet if I see an item not identified, I'm don't like to give up, that being said if I have no idea and having no luck in the research, I sit back and try to learn/educate myself on the ones I have trouble IDing.

The A team has inspired me to jump in and try to help to find out What It Is!!!

P.S. I have also learned a lot on how to get a correct ID from watching the A team in action!!!

Hey Pat, Yes, keep on keepin' on! I think you've contributed greatly to the WIT forum. Sometimes a person can mention one word, and it will spark a thought toward a different search.

My Magic 8-Ball works pretty good most of the time when dealing with Victorian items, which is the area I feel most comfortable, but I still give my 2-cents on other items from different time periods. I feel very fortunate to have been raised in a household where my parents (especially my Momma) loved antiques, restored them, bought/sold, etc. Evidently the gene ran true because I've been buying/selling/mule skinning antiques & collectibles for 41 years. Even when I was teaching school, I owned/operated a shop on the weekends. I've seen a lot of items come and go, which gives me somewhat of advantage sometimes.

I appreciate everyone's ideas and contributions toward ID-ing items, and there's no such thing as a 'stupid answer or guess' because that very answer may help to lead someone else to the solution. I love a good challenge, but more importantly I love this 'family' of folks in TNet.

Carry on!
:) Breezie

ok gang...I really felt a bit akward. Now I feel differantly.I will here and now,and with confidence invite those on the,"sidelines"to join the B team and begin the quest for knowledge.I have learned more here in my short time than I have working alone in the field in 30 years.I thank you all.

I still hope to hear more and not just for myself. There are many like me who would like to partisipate but may be intimidated.

To them I say,"the waters fine...jump in"

all good gang...and really....thank you

I wanna add one more thing then I will shut up.....as with anything if we dont involve new people...especially young people what we are and who we are will soon die, many great scholars have been on this site and for unknown reasons to me,have left. This saddens me,but with every new "resident",its like a birth.None of us quit growing and learning

I wish I could like that twice kugar...folks have complicated lives...its the here and now that matters to the health of this wonderful place. We know it...others too.I spent almost a year skulking this site...even after I joined. One of several top choices.I knew I would spend my valuable spare time wherever I ended up.Not a small decision for me.TNet was the obvious choice. You and many others nailed it down for me.And I guess that is my point in all of this.

I'm quite sure I'm not alone in giving my free time a high value.I want those folks to feel secure that their time will be well spent...like mine has been.If for no other reason, this post is an invitation to those like me.

I say go for it new folks...these are really nice folks who know their stuff. You are as welcome as they have made me....easy...just pull the trigger.
