What Is Clad?

I'm new to treasure hunting and I keep seeing the word "clad" used. I have a good idea but I want to know for sure.
Modern coinage which is "clad" or sandwiched together. Pennies post 1982 and dimes and quarters post 1964. Dates before this were solid copper for the pennies and a good percentage of solid silver for the dimes and quarters.

might be crap but they all spend (LOL)
Truthfully, to me finding a post 82 cent is almost as bad as a poptop. Actually, I would be happier to find a 60's ziptop than another post 82 clad memorial cent. :D >:(

what is clad -- modern day junk coinage -- it spending money not worth saving -- unlike nice wheat cents --old buff nickles and silver coins -- its post 1982 cents (crappy zinc cents) -- post 1939 nickles except the silver WW2 ones --dimes after 1964 --quarters after 64 and halves after 1970

well while nickles are not clad per say they if not indain heads or silver WW2 types most folk hold them to be junk spending money --- clad is most thought of as * junk coins * coins not worthy of collecting -- which is what most detectors mean when they say found CLAD -- ie no collectible or silver type coins --ie basically its modern spending money -- however you are correct --nickles are not * a "clad " coin --- sandwiched copper cored coin like post 1964 dimes or quarters or post 70 half coin are --or "plated" like the post 1982 copper / zinc cents are .

Dudes!
In Japan there are one dollar (100 Yen) clad and five dollar (500 Yen) clad. those things add up for mid-hunt six pack real quick. (there are NO 'drinking in public' laws in japan) Also, the showa 62 (1987) 50 yen (half dollar) is pure clad as well but worth $200 bucks because they only made 775,000 of them! The 2001 and 2002 cents (1 yens) are already listed at $1-$7 depending on condition because they only made 8 million then 9 million respectively. I went to a coin shop and bought the '87 50 yen and a hand full of the '01 and '02 1 yens just for the investment.
99.9% of the population here aren't even aware of it.
Now that's CLAD worth CLAPPING about!
I'm attaching a picture of the modern clad coinage of Japan. Remember 1 Yen is 1 cent but this particular set, the 50 piece is listed at $200 bucks.

Dern! I can't wait to find some old silver coinage here so I can stop bragging about the Nip Clad!
ps- I do envy you all for being able to hunt old US coins. I still have my childhood collection.
