What is Brass Object Found ACW Site?

I've tried to turn this into a Civil War artifact. When I first pulled it up, I thought it might be a trigger guard, but I just can't see that at all. Well, before I put in the "unknown pile," I thought I'd chunk it up here to get responses. It is brass. It has a serial number, like 8232 or something. Thanks!

Come on guy... I have horseshoe's from George Washington's, PAUL REVERES, General Lee's and MANY others from there original horses!!!! AND.. I have letters swearing to it also....!
