Broken pipe tamper?

Nope, no holes in it.. I knew this would throw people for a loop, the day I dug this, an archie walked over and asked us what we were finding.. I guess he lived across the street and obviously we didn't show him anything too great. Everything I showed him he nailed the i.d. instantly except for this one.. He said 'wow, this looks like the oldest thing youve got, but i have no clue what it is' haha.. the unsolved relic :laughing9:

It looks like a finial for the end of a small flag pole; if not, it looks like some kind of finial.Breezie

If the archaeologist came across and was friendly and naturally curious as to what you are finding, I think it would have been worth taking a chance to give him or her the benefit of the doubt.

Losing a couple of coppers is worth running into a friendly archaeologist, and allowing them to get excited by your finds and to give your their opinions on the site and materials.

I know the press is bad, but I am bringing two of my buddies digging with me this weekend in the spot where I think the local club will also be hunting, and there will be three archaeologists at a club hunt. i already brought one, and she had a great time digging for targets and looking for murky dimes.

Try to help me change the times. I am not yelling at you. I have actually written you into my will.

You have to understand plehbah, first I'm 27 and fairly new to metal detecting... I started when I was 13 and hunted for a year or so out in Missouri.. Only in February of last year did I start again. All the people I've met while partaking in this hobby have vehemently warned me not to allow archaeologists "in" on what I am finding. I am 100% certain there are exceptions to the rules just like anything else in life. Another example, this February I obtained permission to hunt a 1780's church in my area and the pastor was the same way.. "If you find anything, please don't tell anyone because theyve already done 2 archaeological digs here and didn't find anything but we had to fund the digs." That is the only reason(s) I am leery to show an archaeologist my finds. As for changing the times, well, I will do my part and I do in fact know where he lives. He was telling us that he used to be a detectorist before he crossed over into the dark side. :laughing9: He was a nice guy.. And thank you for putting me in your will. I love murky dimes

I was going to say a whistle but there are no holes. It could be some sort of finial.

The church had to fund the Archaeological digs? :icon_scratch: It must have been a private contract at the request of the church otherwise why should they have to pay? Interesting.
Good luck on the I.D.
Dave.

over here most digs are funded by developers: every house, road, carpark has to have the Archaeological tick in the box. Very few are privately or academically funded. Not sure how it works over there, maybe the Church was building something??

That is what I was told.. I had never heard of anything like that, but it was near Williamsburg, VA (episcopal).. Both times I spoke with the pastor he relayed the same info :dontknow: I will tell you that I found close to nothing there. Maybe 20c in clad and one flat button. I think two musket balls. The yard was a good acre or two and should have had several relics. The pastor said he'd been there for 20 years and I was the first to ask. It's pretty obvious I wasn't the early bird cuz I sure didn't get the worm.

Does the bottom look as if it slide into something else, thus being a finial? Breezie

The church might have been a designated landmark, or on the National Register of Historic Places, or something like that. To be required to have an archaeological dig before any sort of renovation means that they were receiving Federal funds of some kind.

Now, back to identifying this mysterious find!

I think you are right about both.. First, the church is a historical landmark or at least I would think so, it has one of those historic markers by the road. Second, they had a new building that looked less than a year or two old and another building that was maybe 8 or 10 years old. I know nothing about the laws but it seems like this is the plausible explanation as to why the pastor told me that.. back to the relic, its only broken on the bottom end that breezie calls the neck sleeve :icon_scratch: if anyone would like a different angle or something let me know

similar to what I said & the Laws here. ie. they disturbed the land for building but had to pay for a dig before proceeding :dontknow:
