goodmorning guys, i need to ask a question,,, i have been collecting toned/rainbows (The correct term would be "hued" coins for about 2 years now (mostly modern) , my collection is close to 500 coins now, many, many hours have been put into this and very proud of it,, this morning i had a email from littleton coin, usually i check it out and see whats new, what i ended up seeing may just make me quit, here is the picture ssofrainbow1.jpg releasing a 2019 rainbow eagle!!!!! WHATTTT Wait a minute,, so much hunting i have done here, this is a joke, I DO NOT LIKE LITTLETON they have killed the meaning and purpose of collecting for those who work for it!

.heres a peek at a section of my hued coins

Considering how easy it to fake at least you know that one was altered from the get go. Pennies are used by various people to test for sulfur which also tones them.

Nice coins! :icon_thumleft:

I like your cents. Unless a coin is slabbed by a major company, or I find it, I won't touch the rainbows. Except this one. Too many fakes.indian rainbows.jpg

I liked those toned coins until I found out they are easy to make. So, I tried it myself. It is pretty easy. Unless you can tell real from fake, don't bother. Here's my attempts. Gary

Put a coin out in the sun long enough it will tone also

A2coins, I just got a cleaned Indian. Detail is great. I'll set it out and forget where I put it so the sun can do its work.

I just noticed that in the Billings Mt. craigslist that someone is selling some toned Liberty dollars in the collectors section. :dontknow:

Iv read that gasoline also works very well for toning...

You can also tone Lincoln Cents by placing them in a bowl of mixed water and Dawn dishwashing liquid for a short time. Rinse with freshwater, remove them, then pat dry with a soft towel and then let air dry. You will see that they have already taken on some bluish, magenta and purplish hues (toning). If then placed on a window sill where they can get some sunlight, they will tone even further. Some hand soaps will do the same thing but the color toning is somewhat different with each.

I collect the Cobalt and Gun Metal toned Proof Jefferson Nickels. They are usually cheap and not that hard to find in fairly high Proof grades. They may not be worth a lot now but sometime down the road, they will.

I only valued coins I dug. They had more meaning to me.

I have never personally seen the attraction of toned coins. I have a few and I don't like them. Call me strange, I guess.

I have a few cameo Morgans that look good (to me).

And a really attractive pair of toned Trade (again, to me).

This Barber was in a desk I "inherited" from a great-aunt.

Thanks for the comments everyone, 2005bisonreverse.jpg check out my newest addition :)

Putting cleaned coins in the oven for a short time will give them a rainbow colored hue. If the fakes have soured you on collecting just collect other types of coins. Don't let the "bad apples" of the world discourage you from a hobby you like.
