I went to a school I hadn't been to before today. It was built in the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration. When I got there, there were still a lot of kids playing after school, but I figured I'd go about my business and they'd ignore me.

Well, they were like pilot fish. By the time I left an hour or so later, I had about 6 of them hovering around and wanting to dig and swing the detector, etc. Earlier this week I was stymied by a swarm of gnats; today it was a swarm of 2nd-graders. Every time they saw a worm--and there were many--they named it after me; Chris Jr., then Chris the Third, and on and on. We were up to Chris the 29th or so by the time I left. And they did a good job repairing the holes.

I did manage to find a few things, though, despite the distractions. A few quarters, couple of wheats, old spoon ("Belfry Silverplate"), some old keys and a teensy ring marked sterling.

Thanks for taking a look and HH!

Hehe, sounds fun but a bit annoying in a good way. Bet at least one of those kids will grow up to carry on the hobby in the way you showed them. Way to go!

Nice finds.:icon_thumleft: I try to save the schools for early Sunday morning, when the little darlings are catching up on their sleep:laughing7:

Some hints for dealing with kids. Try to avoid them. Do not look up or make eye contact. Do not speak to them. If they attempt to speak to you, point to your headphones and shake you head indicating you can't hear them. If none of this works, tell them firmly to go play and leave you alone. There are couple of reasons why. First parents don't like strangers talking to their kids. Second, kids are unpredictable. I had one reach in my hole because he saw something while I still had my digger in it. Nearly cut him and really scared me. Now I don't let a kid near me, and will leave if I can't get rid of them.

Those are all very good points. I'm not inclined to have any more interactions with kids while I detect in the future. That said, these were pretty good kids and I mostly enjoyed them. They had some adult supervisors around who came by occasionally to see if they were bugging me and I said they were fine. When I needed a break from them I just gave them my crossbow and a quiver of arrows and told them to go play with it in the woods. KIDDING

Yep! Two of them said they wanted one for their birthdays

Some kids are ok as are the parents, some give off a bad vibe (usually when I disappear)

Most people are just curious, but it only takes one person with nothing better to do then complain and ruin it. Just remember to use your best discretion!

I like stories like that, who knows you might have inspired the next great treasure hunter
