by the way, what kinds of metals can a metal detector detect?

in all-metal mode, well that says it ALL
the lower the discrimination the more metal/s you will pick up
the higher the disc. the other "trash" metals will be cancelled(small iron, small steel, most(small)aluminium, gold,)most times unless its a large enough piece to cancell the disc. circiut/setting...follow?

Sorry I mean I thought it only detected things made out of metal, I did'nt know it detected other things like gold or aluminum or silver or other things like that.

dekalb33, she is a beginner.

boojagirl, What kind of detector are you using?
It should detect all metals: commonly Gold, Silver, Copper, Brass, Aluminum, Iron and Steel.
If your MD has discrimination you can "tune out" the Ferrous (magnetic) metals such as iron and steel. That way it will only beep with the metals more likely to be treasure.
You may also discriminate out Aluminum but might lose some Gold.
You are doing well. It will help to read your directions thouroughly.

I did read the instructions but I have never understood things by reading about them, I have to actualy do it. Tommorow I plan on looking around by the river if it has gone down far enough, it flooded with the recent rain.

Put different metals under your coil and listen to the sounds. Try a silver coin, nickel, penny, a ring, and alum. foil. Or better yet, make a test garden with different metals. ;D

Welcome Booja! Keep at and you'll be finding great stuff! Some just historical, some worth some dough. But either way the thrill of the hunt will get you addicted quickly. A great hobby. Keep us posted on your finds, you'll love it here! -Ben oh, and at a glance I agree with DeKalb that your find seems to be part of cast iron fry pan. Any marks what so ever on the bottom?
