While I was cleaning coins in the garage my neighbor, who happens to be an older German lady, became interested in what I was doing and asked if I knew anything about old coins. She said when she was a young lady visiting old ruins in Spain she came across a very old coin lying in the dirt. I said I don't know much about older European coins but I know a bunch of nice people who do (That's you Tnetters!). She said she has always wondered what era it was from and was it of any value.

I promised her that I would get her an answer. If any of you out there know this coin please let me know. (It may also be a jeton - perhaps french.) It is thin and about the size of a penny. I believe I have seen it on TN before. I have scanned in the coin. I hope it can be identified from the pictures.

Thanks - TE

Doesn't look like a French Jeton to me. I'm thinking it may be a weight and not a coin but things like this aren't my area to really even guess. I do have several auction catelogs with early finds so will look through if you are not able to get an answer.

Not a coin or jetton.

The weight would be useful? as it is a medicine weight. (I see the snake around the stick)(apothecary weight)

1/8 Dram or drachm (D) (I'm confused which it is?)

Circa 1800.

Above is a site to work out your weight.

Apothecaries Weight
20 grains = 1 scruple
3 scruples = 1 drachm
8 drachms = 1 apothecaries oz

I believe shilling was abbreviated a lot as a D. Might be a money changer's scale weight.

I thought of a coin weight to start with, however if it is 1/2 D that would be a 6 pence which is silver and not worth weighing.

The weight of the item will pin it down.

I am 100% sure its a medicine weight
