but being both sides look nearly exact.

More Likely a Counter Stamp

Yep probably a merchant counter stamped coin...neat find.

It is a counter stamp of some sort,
I found one with a different stamp,
But made with a similar tool ,
Notice the serated edges of the stamping tool?
