I dug this the other day on a large farm, circa 1748. Within a 100 yard circle I dug a Union Breast plate, 3 ringer, flatten 3 ringer and this US Rosette. The letters are close to some other Civil War era rosettes I have found in the books and online but the overall design is not the same. So, I am wondering if it is a later era and just "happened" to be close?? or is it period??

It is stamped brass with a lead filled back... hooks rusted away.

There are many varieties... it's not too suprising that you can't find an exact copy. Many have different back patterns, different letter "fonts" and different molds. Yours, being lead filled, is prolly period.

Nice find... hope you can learn more about it!
