Could you show us the opposite sides of the pieces, to help understand the construction of it. I'm leaning toward it having been from the "golden age" of gilt buttons, around 1840's. That's just based on the pattern on the front, specifically they often had geometric patterns with a weave pattern mixed in.
I can't rember ever seeing one without a backmark though... but I'm no longer expert.

Do you think it could possibly be a Hessian soldier's button, by chance? I was just told earlier today they were in the area where I dug it up. Just a thought.
