I have been working on my tree on ancestry for a good long time now, and I was wondering what “H-4”meant. It was under “years gone to school” I’m suspecting it means four years of school at home. Thanks! ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1523152282.233191.webp

I totally agree with Don, H4 - 4 years of high school...just looked at 1940 Census of my area.

Sorry, but I feel a little skeptical about that because she lived in a very rural area of Tennessee, and she would have graduated in 1912. She was born in 1894. And the only school around was a one room school house.

You just might be correct about that, CivilWarSaver. I'm basing my facts on the 1940 census of my area to include my parents, several aunts, uncles and other people I know personally on the list. This is an rural area of many immigrants.

My wife's grandmother was born in the 1890s and she went to boarding school about 20 miles away ... They were German immigrants and "dirt po" ... she was the youngest of a whole bunch of kids and the family scraped together enough money for her to get some education ....... the boarding school eventually became Delta State University , Cleveland , Ms ..... Of her family, she was the only one born in the USA......
