What do you think? Real or fake?

I got a cameo and necklace today. The necklace was marked 14KP, which I am assuming the store thought was gold plate. (I paid $32; they had a 22K gold plate egg from the 80s that is going for $24 on Ebay for $88.) The chain tested for 14K. The cameo tests for 10K. It is lighter gold than the chain. I am going to run by the jeweler tomorrow.

The bale has a hallmark, a triangle with a line down the middle. I used my phone, sorry the pictures are not so great. I tested the cameo on the bale, on the back, on the filigree. It is not magnetic. What do you think? If this is real, how much would you guess it is worth?

I think some are marked that way mean plumb gold not plated, so its probably 14k. Nice score congrats

Yeah, KP usually means plumb, which would make it true 14k+. I don't remember exacts, but it is something like 13.5k can be marked 14k, but 14KP must be at least true 14k.

This.

Good buys! Look forward to some nice profit. 8-):skullflag:

The chain is the one that is 14KP. That is pulled away, and I am focusing on just the cameo.

So Eh! I took it to a pawn shop to make sure it was really gold. The guy tested it several times, and yes, the pendant is 10K, not plated. He offered me $20. I said no thank you. I will go to my jeweler, who will hopefully offer me more.
ps-- He offered me $10 for the stick pin I picked up for $0.50. I passed on that as well.

Unless you want quick small profit with little/no effort, I suggest you list the items on ebay. Every pawnshop and jeweler would pay me less than I could get elsewhere - even a scrap refinery. And I am talking about sellable jewelry, not scrap.

Depends on your individual sitiuation. I just scrapped a stickpin, 3 bracelets, and a necklace on Saturday. I could have listed them, took pics, shipped them, etc etc. In the end the risk/benefit was to get the quick cash and free up the money for the next buy.

Right. I was merely comparing the "fast nickel" that he was describing to the "slow dime". He didn't invest much in this these items: $0.50 for the stickpin and $8.00? for the chain and cameo. Instead of getting $30 for the cameo and stickpin quickly, he could probably get $30 for the stickpin alone (depending of course).

I agree though, it is a case by case situation. Depends on personal preference, finances, etc. I'm just suggesting that if the money isn't necessary in the near future that he take a shot for more money. Gold buyers will always be there.

She. I'm a woman. Hi. I'm Leah. Nice to meet you. :hello:
I paid $0.50 for the stick pin, but I paid $32 for the cameo. I didn't have a chance to get to the jeweler today, and he is closed tomorrow. I am going to a different one. The problem with selling on ebay is that there is no marking on it. Would you sell one without any markings? I tested it several times in several places, and the pawn did the same thing with the electric tester thingy. That is the only reason I wanted to sell locally. I have so much jewelery sitting here that has to get on Ebay. I CAN NOT BUY ONE MORE JEWELRY JAR FROM GOODWILL until I sell at least one thing. Someone come take my CC away, please????

No self control. It's so much fun. This last one was full of vintage jewelry in great condition. Debating about a fast nickle by dropping it off at the vintage store, or slow dime and selling on Ebay .... Oh, decisions, decisions, decisions.

Hi, she, so sorry. Nice to meet you - I'm Dylan.

Selling an unmarked item is not a problem on eBay. It may get less attention than a marked one, but as long as you describe the item perfectly, explain how it has been tested, guarantee its authenticity and allow returns for a full refund you should have no problem.

Thanks! My jeweler who gives me the best money said to sell it on Ebay. He said the twenty the other guy offered was better than he would do. So it looks like I'm gonna ebay it.

He was so helpful to me. We went through a ton of my jewelry, and told me what each piece was worth on Ebay and what each thing is and how big . Turns out I have two pendants that have diamonds on them! Who knew!??? I thought they were CZs.

Always good news to find out you have diamonds. :) Keep in mind that eBay prices aren't set in stone, though. While some items might not sell for as much as you've been told, reversely some may sell for more. I'vesold used jewelry in excellent condition for 1/10 the retail cost. I've also sold some for what may have very well been the retail price. I take into consideration the spot price of the metal, the price of the item at retail, the condition of the item, the sold listing prices, how much I paid, and other factors. An item can always sell for less. Reversely, someone is always willing to pay more.

Leah, did the jeweler test the chain? Is it 14k? I'm curious if the P was for plumb or for plate. I don't think they bother with plumb much anymore, the "P" too easily confused with plated now.

Do they ever use only "14KP" as plate? I've only run into a few 14KP pieces and all were plumb. The closest plate mark I've seen to 14KP is 14KGP. Do 14KP plated pieces really exist or is it just a rumor in our favor? :skullflag:

I tested the chain.

(The only problem I've had with this is list is that I have gotten several pieces that have both 925 & 14K. The first jeweler said it was plated. Until I realized that it was both.)

Oh, and I nearly bought silver thinking it was platinum. It is very confusing, IMHO. I love the KP, because the stores think it's plated. Is KP worth more than just K?

Here is the list I have:
P Plumb Gold (must be the Karat weight stamped or higher)
PLAT Platinum
PT Platinum
900 or 950 Platinum
S.S. Stainless Steel
Steel Stainless Steel
St. Steel Stainless Steel
Silver Sterling Silver
S. Silver Sterling Silver
Sterling Silver Sterling Silver
925 Sterling Silver
.950 Another Sterling Silver Mark unlike 950 for Platinum
Titanium Titanium
Tungsten Tungsten
Pd Palladium
KP Karat Plumb
CZ There is a Cubic Zirconia stone in the ring (and not a Diamond)

Ksg plated
G.F. or G.P. Gold Filled or Gold Plated
SOL Solitaire Diamond (usually followed by some Carat Weight)
6,7,8,9,10 (A number) Some Jewelers put the ring size in the shank
cw CW means the Carat Weight of the Diamonds or Gems in the ring
GE Gold Electroplate
GP Gold Plated
WGD Weight Gold, as in 14 Karat Weight Gold, or 10 Karat Weight Gold
10KGF, 12KGF, 14KGF = Gold Filled
10KYGF, 12KYGF, 14KYGF = Gold Clad
1/20 12kt GF, 1/20 14kt GF = 1/20th clad gold material of noted Karat.
10 or 14KHE = Heavy Electroplate
10 or 14K.P. = Karat Plate
10 or 14KGS = Gold Shell
10 0r 14KHGE = Heavy Gold Electroplate
10 0r 14KHGP = Heavy Gold Plate
14, 18, or 24k Vermeil = Sterling with Gold gild
Silver Plate = Plated with Silver

KP is worth more as it is guaranteed to be at least 14k. Items stamped 14k can still be 13.X karats legally. I forget what the current standard is so perhaps someone else could shed light.

Is it worth much more? Not really. If you were scrapping the piece(s) it would yield slightly more gold. Collectors may pay slightly more as well. Don't expect the difference in price to be noticeable, though.

Yay! The second jeweler paid me $30 for the cameo. I am thrilled that it is gone. That means I paid $2+tax for a 14KP box chain. I paired it with a 14K peridot charm, and will list it for $75, I think. :-)

I sold these butt-ugly earrings I got for $58. (I stupidly paid $50 thinking I would double my money on ebay. I realized after that one post had been fixed, and there were scratches on it. No way could I sell them.) I so happy those are gone.

Then I scraped a silver. Got $12 for it! This jeweler is sooo nice. (Not the one who bought the cameo.) He sat with me, and we tested every piece, because it all came from a Good Will jar. Then he told me to pull the clasps and rings off the necklaces so I could repair one if I ever got a broken. Which, there was one in the pile to scrap. We fixed it, and now I can pair it with a pendant. :-) Over all it was a good day, IMHO.
