What do you think about while "hunting"?

Hello all,

I was curious what everyone thinks about while they're "swinging the coil"?

What do you think about when you get a good hit?

Do you have a repeating motto going on in your head?

Unfortunately, just lately, I've found myself almost dreading when I get another hit just after I get up from recovering a item. I know you all will help me. I still love detecting, no doubt, I'm just in a weird funk right now.

I was hoping that hearing what you all think about while hunting will help me and might also, in turn, help all of you enjoy your hunting more as well.

When you get to the point where you are dreading the next dig, turn the discrimination up! At least that way you know that you are going to dig something worthwhile!

Usually thinking about anything but work which is why I do this in the first place. It's one of those few activities that captures my attention enough to block out most of life's other distractions. If I'm not in that zone, I get bored quickly.

Thinking about it now, I'm usually analyzing the site as I go for potential foot traffic patterns, etc - so I know where to go next. Other than that I'm focused on learning my MXT sounds trying to minimize those "unproductive squats".

This is what I think about when I am hunting in the woods...................


....I start out with....DON"T STEP ON A SNAKE...don't step on a snake...then after about five minutes...I change to....MAKE SURE YOU DON"T TOUCH THAT POISON IVY.....make sure you don't touch that poison ivy......then shortly thereafter my mind is just an idle blank....total and blissful nothingness! For at least 20 minutes! Then a beep!!! And my first thought is....oh my gosh! Could this finally be a coin out here! Dig the hole and find another shot gun shell....and start all over again!


I gotta get out more....

Well if it is a sidewalk replacement or a yard shaved down. And there are no holes in sight. I think it really pays to hunt at night when others sleep. Then i go along slowly and get a high tone. I glance down and see the dark area on the readout is around 50-68 or so. I smile and proceed to get my target. YES ANOTHER INDIAN HEAD!

i first think about if i were hiding something here, where would i hide it?
Then i look for places to hide, like near the boulder or the largest tree or
the "y-shaped" tree. Other than that, it's my time to unwind and forget
about everything else!

Lately, with as hot as it's been, I mostly just think about if it's worth getting all the sweat in my eyes again. Then I dig anyway. LOL

There is no constant to what I think. Maybey how I think, though. I like to get a song in my head and just plain relax. If I have too much on my mind or think too much about the hunt I may as well go home. I have gone hours away to hunt and could'nt get in my groove, so I went home. Really it comes down to why I'm there. On the beach, I just let it all go and dig everything. On a coin shoot I like to sing, either to myself or out loud. On a cache hunt I'm stricktly bussiness. HH! Chris

Ps. If I plan to be too serious I try to lighten up. It's my game, my rules, my way. I'm gonna have fun or go home.

This may sound odd, but when i am detecting (swinging).... I am not thinking about anything ... I manage to forget about work, responsibilities & anything else I would rather NOT think about.......then when i hear a sound I want to dig my attention goes immediately into ?"what is it most likely to be?" mode. If I get a trash signal , then I expect it to be trash. If i get a coin signal.... I expect it to be a clad coin... etc. etc.. ?And when I dig it up & it turns out to be a keeper & not what I expected.... then I am thinking "YIPPIE!!!!!" .

Sometimes there ARE occasions when I get a deep signal that registers as a dime, quarter, half dollar, or any other silver coin..... then I DO get excited at the prospect .... especially when I get a REALLY good dollar signal which is a rarity. No silver dollar yet though but there is always.... without fail .... excitement when I get a good dollar signal. ? ?

All the normal thoughts of what I might find. But, more Important Is the way I feel. I go back In time, to another era. Sometimes I can almost see the old timers burying their gold.
