well my son i don't think would have really a prob carring he's 5 but 4' tall and 95lbs no exageration! just rather have him learn on a beep and dig machine than a screen just hoping that possibly he'd grow into it for 2 or 3 years

I know what you mean. I gave my one 40 yr old daughter my Ace 250 because I didn't like it at all. It now sits in her closet collecting dust. I gave my 36 yr old daughter one of the Chinese ones and she loves it to the max! The first daughter would like one of the Ch. ones so I might just give her mine and get another one to replace it.

I'm 6' 1" and the Chinese detector is a bit short for me but I still use it in some cases. In fact it has found things in one area that dozens of other detectors have passed over. It is the extremely low frequency (5.6 Khz) coupled with low gain that causes it's low-powered yet worthwhile performance, and is also why it does so well on old copper pennies and silver items. Nearly every time I go to that one certain place it finds silver - but not so with any of my other detectors. My cz-70 with it's 5 and 15 Khz almost matches it for silver finding, but not quite. The cz has too much discrimination built into it, like the Compadre.

Good luck, and hey, don't forget to plant a few pennies for kids, even if you tell them you did to test them. It makes things more interesting for a beginner.
