What do you guys mean by "listen for the deep tones??"

I just started using a Minelab..a Minelab Sovereign XS to be precise after many..many years using mostly White's detectors.I have found lotsa stuff with it so far but no old deep coins.I was wondering what people mean when the say to find the old stuff listen for the faint deep tones.I have been detecting for years but most of my finds have been 8" or less cause I only dug the strong repeatable tones up to now.Can someone give me some insight on this and maybe some tricks with the Sovereign to go for the deep older stuff?I did pick up the 15" WOT coil today for it.

That's part of it. Listen to the faint tones but also ignore the discriminator. I've dug tons of good stuff that read as iron for different reasons but I had a good idea it wasn't because of the detector's response to the metal. I've been digging for a good many years and have mostly used Whites. I still use my old Blue/Gray most of the time.

o k but with the Sovereign when you go over nails the threshold goes away so when they say listen for breaks in the threshold how do you know it's not a nail. Also with the Sovereign when you go over a small item there is a very faint tone.My Sovereign doe not have a meter on it so the tones are all I have to go by.And it seems everything but trash like bolts and washers have the same tone. Those are a low deep sound..everything else is high pitched tones?????

Re: What do you guys mean by "listen for the deep tones??"

Actually,
What a great question!

In a nutshell because of my A.D.D. :D
Deep tones are Broken tones that plain sound good . Just a audible "pip" or "fart" of a tone.

I dug a small Spanish coin cache at 10 inches that made a silver "fart" at me. :)
After the first scoop of dirt the silver tone screamed 1-57 or so. (etrac)
Silver tone...you know what that sounds like.
If I had been any where else and heard that "fart" I would have never dug it. You Dig? :D

So, w/o making this a book and confusing you.

If you know you are in a old spot holding quality relics, just dig everthing.(tones)

Including "Farts" ;D

You Don't. :dontknow:
Just assume because you are in a quality plot that it could be something to put in your creel.

I have dug hundreds of nulls on my Sovereign GT and Excals when I first started because I wanted to be sure, and to see what was there, never once was a null anything other then iron for me....

That's right. Good phones w/ volume control are a must

Well you should be pretty well confused by now. I think what they said was dig everything......... If it sounds good or bad and if it nulls out dig it.................I don't dig nulled out sounds >>>>>>>.

Re: What do you guys mean by "listen for the deep tones??"

Yeah I just feel I may be missing the deeper stuff.I have an old mason jar lid about a foot down but all the newer coins in the yard I've been doing are 6-8 deep already so the older stuff has to be even deeper.I leave the disc and notch controls turned all the way counterclockwise..does this have anything to do with it?I am not sure what to set these at?I don't want to disc out foil for fear of missing gold.

Re: What do you guys mean by "listen for the deep tones??"

Oc Maryland, VB, Alantic City, NJ , and Delware Beachs this works...........Excalibur 800, faint tone, almetal, disturbance in the threshold, no signal in discrimate mode, Deep coins...clear away sand to disc signal. Just got back from Boca Rotan, Fort LD same results, wet sand only. Would be the same with the sovn. Does not work on the west coast of Fl, PP/Discriminate both about the same depth ...If your searching the dirt, discriminate is more then likely deeper....joe
