What do you do when coin counter comes up short?

I dumped 2 boxes of dimes and pulled out 2 silvers so when I dumped, I put back 2 dimes so count would be back at $500. Teller says my total is $498.30. I tell her that can't be right and explain that I was positive there was $500. Long story short, she keeps telling me there is no way the machine can be wrong and basically....too bad. What do you do? Had the total been a dollar or 2 more, I would have talked to manager. It does make me wonder how many times I have been shorted. I always have a number in mind with in a few dollars of what is in bag I am dumping but when teller basically tells you - Sorry, that is what machine read and that is what you get - How can you argue? You have a bag full of coins and they are going to call human error on you before they tell you that - "yep, I bet it is our machine that is off, here you go sir...". Don't think that's going to happen.

Has this happened to anyone? How was it handled if it did?

Has happened to me many times. Look at your receipt from the counter (I hope you do get one, if not, you are screwed), mine always shows the tally. Dimes counted as cents. I don't raise a stink, and chalk it up as part of the game. If it's a couple bucks worth miscounted, they credit my account.

This is just one of the things that can and does happen. Sometimes you will get shorted a bit, and sometimes you'll come out a bit ahead. Its possible that your dime boxes were short a few coins. Its also possible that the machine malfunctioned a bit and shorted you. Either way, its only $1.70. Consider it a dumping fee and hope that next time you make a little extra.

Yeah, I did think that it could have been the boxes I went through that were short. $1.70 is no big deal, I just did not like her attitude.

my favorite is when machine rolled half's have Penny's instead of half's. Figure I have had 20 rolls or so of those now. Cost of doing business I guess.
Same theory on the machines - when I read about all the fees out there I am ok when it is off +/- $5

It's called the cost of doing business.

Think of all the times you come out ahead; with keepers you find in the bags.

Unless you know this bank, and it's employees, very, very well AND have a good rapport already, you're best to not make a big deal out of it; as it only has the potential of turning tellers against all CRHers.

Remember, tellers can either be our best allies...........or our worst nightmares.

I prefer the former.

if it is only a few dollars i would just take the loss. if you make waves you may get kicked off the counter

Take it on the chin. As long as you are finding Silver you are still way ahead anyway.

Do machine rolled pennies. You will get a few dimes. I've had as many as 23 dimes in one box of pennies ($25).

For that amount of money i do nothing. But when it is a considerable amount i plead my case untill they agree to do something. Will find out tomorrow if my last "short" will be reimbursed. They said they could do nothing untill i asked for the manager and told her that there has to be some plan for when the machine doesnt work all the time insisting that when this has happened at other banks b4 that i was compenstaed.
