:laughing7::laughing7::laughing7::laughing7:Very funny!

Be respectful always dig nice neat holes make sure I fill them in good and pick up garbage when I see it. Ans always gain the proper permission before going on someones property.

Cool sticker! You get a lot of people saying they don't promote it, because they don't want more competition!

I don't Dig Dixie, but I drive Miss Daisy, does that count? :)

I don't promote it. I actively discourage it. I don't need the extra competition!

Same here, by golly. I don't want it promoted. I am of the opinion that there is a finite amount of good finds out there. Too many people doing it already thanks to those chuckleheads on TV. Imagine what would happen if metal detecting really REALLY caught on. You couldn't even go to the beach because everyone would include a detector in their beach gear. Instead of having more or less free reign over the whole beach, now you have to share it with 100 people or more, and your "claim" becomes very small. Or how about a picnic where instead of dodging footballs and Frisbees, you have to step over and between people detecting, swinging, and digging.

The more coils swinging, means more finds will be found. Its already bad enough. Do you want to only find clad and bobby pins for the rest of your life? No, I don't. I truly believe that nothing good can come from promoting this hobby. You don't have to promote it or justify it to anyone else. Enjoy it for what its worth and keep your trap shut.

by sharing information with other hunters, like telling them where the best places to detect are

I put up ads in places that have those cork boards for putting up fliers and such, that tell folks if they lost something in their yards like jewelry that I'll find it for free. I show them how responsible caring detectorists recover targets in a professional manner, I'll explain my machines functions if they are curious, I'll even let them use my backups if they want. Of course I ask them if they could spread what I do around to friends, family, neighbors whoever. Doing that has made it to where I've got virgin ground to hunt probably for the rest of my life. That's how I promote the hobby, that and through my church.

I volunteer giving basic detecting classes each year to people interested in the hobby. I figure if I can show someone the proper way to dig a plug or the basic functions of a detector it helps the hobby as too many out there just don't know what they're doing which makes us all look bad.

Well i am like most that posted here… I do nothing to promote metal detecting .. I am not a dealer so ..I think there is way to many out there now .I want no more out there … You can bet that these treasure forums and those stupid detecting shows on tv helped flood our detecting with two many out there now … If any thing i will try to keep new ones out of detecting…….

A "show n tell" of weekend finds on Mondays, has encouraged 7 coworkers to purchase detectors. Two of which, live close and taken MDing seriously. They both hunt with me 50% of the time, as schedules permit.
I've also sold 2 detectors on CL. To promote the sale, I gave a clinic on proper detecting methods with a planned hunt. Both purchasers were newbs. One has returned the favor with an invite to his 150yr old home site.
I hunt alone often, especially when investigating new sites, but have no problem bringing others along.
Great thread.
Peace ✌

Maybe it's just the time of day I go but I've never encountered another person metal detecting but I did see someone detecting on the surf cams for my area.
