North East Hunter's question about how much clad have you found this year got me wondering about this. I have only been MDing for about a month and have been searching yards that date to the 1940s and some huntedover CW sites and am coming up long on the pull tabs and short on the good stuff. So, not the standard places but "in your personal experience" what do you consider to be the top three kind of places for finding clad?

Thanks,
julien

I'm a 2-month newbee too, but have found about $55 in clad. Top places for me have been both heavy traffic and obscure neighborhood parks.

I also lucked up on an entire 1950s neighborhood being buldozed. So a pile of clad and hand full of wheaties + 1 merc from that area before they started the demo. Wish I could get permission to get back in there now that they've started, but get no response. It wasn't unusual to get 5 coins in a 3 foot diameter area in some spots. Also found a 10-coin wheatie spill... That was fun.

If I were going just for clad I would have to say.

1. A school playground.

2. A well known swimming hole, sand helps.

3. Parks

4. I have found a lot of clad in camping areas as well. You want to hunt in a place that gets used a lot.

If you just want to find some clad for practice I look at it like this. Take any tree in any yard that is 100 years old. I would say in that amount of time a few people have played around set in shad. etc. Now put that same tree in a park or a school playground and the roots should have problems growing for all the clad.
Sometime I find a place that should be loaded but will have very few coins. Then I will detect a field and find a pocket full. Do a little reseach and watch the coin count go up.
One thing is for sure if your digging pull tabs that means it shouldn't be much longer before the gold and silver finds you.

When i first started hunting, I was after clad to get back my investment. Now i hunt older coins. But i want to add one spot that was great for clad. Grassy strips between the street and sidewalk. Lots of clad and rings in these, sometimes some silver too. If the grassy strip is next to a bar parking lot, it will have a larger percentage of quarters.

:D At bigrig40's house! :D

;)

1. Around the front entrance to a school or school auditorium.
2. Park.
3. Athletic field around common grounds and grandstands.

My best places, and a couple that I would suspect but haven't checked yet, would be

*1, The Beach
*2, Tot Lots
3, Athletic Fields (Have Searched a couple *Volleyball Pits but would think areas around soccer and baseball fields etc., under bleachers would be good also. Problem being all the aluminum supports and cramped spaces. Might cause some difficulty.)
4, City Parks, especially those where there have been festivals or fairs.
5, If in a snowy area, check for where the town dumps snow. In our area, a few towns, clear their down town business districts and parking lots and truck the piles away. Find where they dump all that snow and you might find a lot of lost coin and keys...
6. I have heard that if you can find where storm water is dumped in a local drainage creek or canal... there is often a lot of stuff washed out of sewers. Stuff lost on the streets can get washed in the drains during a rain and then, over time, make their way out of the system.
7, Street and sidewalk projects and construction sites. Anywhere that the surface is graded or bulldozed or where concrete or asphalt surfaces are dug up can expose old items that have been unattainable for many years.

*from my personal experiences.

Wow, if it were me...I think i'd go in there about 9:00AM after all the mornings and speak to whoever is in charge about coming in there after hours or on Sunday, or either just go on in on Sunday AM and act like you belong there.
But that's just me...

Thanks peeps. I think i'll go out next week and hit a few local parks etc.

I'll report back and let you know how it goes.

I agree with what others have said:

1. Schools
2. Beaches or swimming holes
3. Parks/Playgrounds

I hunt schools alot, and I just want to add that most people seem to hunt right around the playground/jungle gym equipment. I have found plenty of clad that way myself, but often find more clad (and older coins as well) in the school ball fields. So don't give up after scanning the woodchips and sanboxes. Get out there and hunt the soccer/baseball field too!

Definately agree with grassy common areas in camp grounds... where the kids (old and young) play. I usually run out of daylight before I run out of targets there.
