Found this on a farm that dates back to the 1850's, any suggestion on what it was?

Not to sound like a smart mouth but it is more than likely to be an old farmers tool. Maybe a tool used for tilling or something like that.

Hard to tell, but I believe that is a straw knife, the 2 wood handles are gone.View attachment 1325666

Agree with Ben, second photo is part of a clevis hitch.

I can understand the clevis hitch being solved, but straw knives were longer than 6". I think someone was premature in posting as solved.

Sorry, I didn't mark as solved. I just thought it looked like a straw knife with most of the blade rotted away. Kinda like somebody holding a horseapple and asking what kind of grass it used to be. LOL
