Peachy, you sure do find some interesting critters. :icon_thumleft:

I would say its a moth, what type I have no idea.

T-net will ID it, amazing the knowledge here.

LOL I know huh. I think it's because I am always looking for critters no matter what else I happen to be doing. I found this one while looking for arrowheads in a tobacco field. From a distance I thought it was a big speckled piece of flint. As I got closer I could see it's eyes, they were huge. His face reminds me of a little bat.

Definitely a moth so it's harmless to people. Not sure on the exact species but I will try to dig something up!

I think it is a "sphinx moth" don't know the exact species but it looks very similar to the "Rustic sphinx" or the "Waved sphinx"

I agree on the sphinx moth, though, I haven't seen any like this in one up here in the Finger Lakes.

Thanks everyone. I guess maybe the patterns on a moth may be as unique as our fingerprints. I cant find an exact match but some are very close.

You could summit your photos to "What's that bug" Daniel can't answer everything sent to him but he does a good job with the small staff he has. He has IDed several insects for me, here is a link to his website:
