These two items came out of a box titled "foreign currency". There were a few dozen items in the box, mostly, well, foreign currency, from the late 1800's thru to the mid 1940. Nothing worth more than a dollar. All of these went into my daughters coin collection, each one in a flip, identified by year, country, and value, and it says grandpa on it, so she'll remember later that it's from him.

Six coins were much higher in value, like the 1848 Hungarian 1 kreuzer that worth about $100, and a counterstamped 1867 US three cent nickel. We'll have to get that taken to a pro to get that appraised.

These two items I don't know what to do with.

I cannot tell if this is a charm or a coin

Or what this is. But I do know enough to know that this might be a reproduction of whatever it's supposed to be...

Thoughts?

First looks like a belly dancers hanging, coin like jewelry.

The other I think your right, its copying something ancient.

They are both Ottoman/Turkish.

But these are very hard to ID for Western eyes.

The first one looks Turkish, or rather Ottoman, from the 1800's. Whether it's real or not I have no idea, but the pattern around the edge is right for one. Here's a slightly similar one, it's not a match, but you might contact this site and ask them. Let us know what you find out....

Edit.... link didn't work for some reason.....and the second one didn't work either..... ugh.... If you go to the "Catalogue" then scroll down to Ottoman, there are some coins with a similar border design

I wish that link worked... Looking for Ottoman yields over three hundred results.

Now I see they are only $20, its more likely the real deal, so change my mind on the 2nd one.

Yesterday you said that this coin must be a reproduction.

Now that you know that an authentic one of these coins is only worth twenty dollars, you now say that this is authentic.

Why did you think was copy yesterday?

I handled thousands of ancient coins, we find a 1000 Roman coins a year. Normally repro's shout to me, I rarely get it wrong but on this one I was. Mostly because its not my area of expertise. To me it just had a very funky looking 'cast look' to it. I then 'guessed' it maybe copying a valuable rarity, but its not.

Coins, similar to the one above as attributed to Queen Lilavati, were produced for literally hundreds of years past the three reigns of Queen Lilavati. For example, consider the coinage of king Prakrama Bahu VI who reigned between 1415 and 1468. I have not studied the similarities between coins of the reigning kings during that period, but a spot check reveals coins of the same general design throughout those couple of hundred years. Sharper eyes than mine may be necessary to make a true attribution of the OP's coin.

Go to page 7 of the Ottoman coins, 15th one down, it's similar, at least the border is. Not an exact match though. I would send your pics to that site and ask them about it

NOLA_Ken, thanks for wading through all that!

We can display coins per page as 10, 20, 50, or 100, so "page 7" is different for each of us. It shows us different regions though.

Which region is the one you spotted?
