Maybe a box of nestled Kokeshi dolls? Hard to tell what they are made of.

Japanese wife said its more than likely Chinese. I buy a similar type of box in Japan. They usually use this type of box for souvenirs, gifts, etc. If it was a high grade kokeshi doll it would be made of wood.

they are from China and called 无锡惠山泥人 wuxi huishan clay figures. the box is written in traditional form. wuxi is a city in jiangsu and huishan is a district in that city. there are many kinds of these clay figures so it's difficult to gage a price. some go for 5 dollars US a box and some a few hundred US a box. at least the ones I saw on Alibaba site. hope this helps
