Wish I could help ya herbie,all I can say is I've found some like it before.This is one like I found this one came from a site that dated mid 19th century to late 19th.I thought at first mine might be a nipple protector as the one side looks like it has a mark like a hammer would leave.But since then I'm not so sure really just held on to it as the site has a little age & thought someone might know someday.

I know ya gotta protect those nipples, Lol, got a replica 1858 Colt.
I previously posted somewhat similar items people said would seal screws as they were driven into boat hull planks, these are a totally different design, but may be for the same purpose.

old sailboats sometimes used a soft metal punch to fasten rivets after a while the punch wore out. They were soft so the teak wood would not be damaged while the brass rivet was punched in.
