The reverse of the (Turkish) coin shows the image of a 'toughra'. A tughra (Ottoman Turkish: طغرا tuğrâ) is a calligraphic monogram, seal or signature of a sultan that was carved on his seal and stamped on the coins minted during his reign. The history of the toughra is most interesting. One story is: Long ago, a sultan was asked to sign a document. He didn't know how to write so he dipped his fingers into the inkwell and drew a design on the document--similar to what you see on the reverse of your coin. The image became the country's national symbol. The three parallel lines represent the sultan's middle three fingers as he began his 'signature'.
