What are these gear shaped objects?

A friend has found a crate of these disks at an old foundry, and has been using them in her artwork. I was told that they used to make furnaces at this foundry- could they be used in those? Others have suggested car parts or saw parts but we have no idea. Thanks!

Used to go over vintage stove pipes to close the gap around the pipe and the hole in the wall.

I believe bowwinkles and tony both got it.I,ve seen those in old farm tenant houses used exactly as they described.

They also give some stand-off of the flue/stove pipe from the wall in case there a fire in the flue....you don?t want a hot pipe scorching or burning the wall!
