From the late 1800s area. I like that the top still opens! And the design on the other piece is nice

Looks like some kind of clip

The 2nd piece was used to hang something on the wall. Back in the day since the walls were plastered they had rails mounted on the wall where this was used.

The bigger item might be an ink well. :dontknow:

Your brass inkwell find was likely originally set in a school desk, it's a unique looking piece.
I've found glass examples in the field before but never a brass one.

I'm so old that I remember those grammar school desks with an actual inkwell hole set in its top. Of course, by the time I got there in the late 1960s the hole where the inkwell used to sit was now being used to hold bottles of school glue. My elementary school had desks like those shown below, some of ours were even older like the second desk pictured here. Some had decorative wrought iron on the sides, but since it was the late '60s, we all used Bic ball point pens by then.

Thanks - any idea about the date range? As early as . . .

So I did a bit of searching on brass ink wells and came up with a couple that seem to be a match. I think mine may have been a portable or on an office desk. And I'm thinking c. 1880s.

Your second piece is a drawer handle.

SORRY
Posted the handle to the wrong Thread.

The first one looks like it maybe an inkwell, but it looks like it had something attached to the bottom.

The second one is a Victorian picture hanger.

Thanks for weighing in. Seems a little too thin and small to be a handle ... the curved part just fits around my finger. Is there a different example you can post closer to it?

Dating your inkwell insert is kinda tricky due to the lack of detail Scott.
The style of your find is more 'utilitarian and functional' than decorative.
So date wise, as you suggested 1870 - 1920 I would think.

There might be a makers mark underneath all the corrosion on the base, that would help date it more precisely. :icon_scratch:

If it were mine, I'd tumble it and have the lid reattached... but that's just me. :laughing7:

If you wanted to mail it to me Scott I'll tumble it to you, at least that way it will be displayable.
