Yesterday I found my first silver war nickel, a 1945P, while metal detecting. Today, I stopped at Dunkin Donuts on my way into the city and the cashier hands me another silver war nickel, this one a 1943P!!!

This is the second time this has happened this year. Back in January or February I found a silver Rosie while detecting, and the next day I got one in pocket change!!

If this happens next time I find large copper, I will faint!

Nice find,

Hello,

I love Silver War Nickles, one of my fav's tons of history. They were minted only from 1942-1945 because we needed the Nickle for the Nickle Plated Armor on Tanks. In most cases the Mint mark was moved to Above the Dome of the building.

Nice finds,
Keep @ it and HH!!

:D YES! What ARE the odds! :D That's neat! Go find that copper! 8)

Well said! I was surprised that the VDI on the nickel (which is actually 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% Manganese) read a 20 on the DFX, which is a little lower than an ordinary nickel. As MUD said, you can distinguish the nickel by the mintmark above the dome. It was the first time the "P" mintmark was used.

Another WWII oddity is the 1943 "steel" cent. As far as I know, it is the only magnetic US coin. Try it!

Ya never know. I found a 1929 Buffalo nickel in my change a week ago, and figure it came from self-serve checkout at the grocery store.
