Myself and Southwillrise went to a wooded area next to and old plantation and rice fields. We have found many hoe heads and buttons in the past. We dug a tool that we can not ID. It is aprox 8" long, has hook or narl on the end and and open spot that looks like a wooden hoe handle would go into. Can anyone ID for us?

We also found a small pewter deer head about 6" deep. It looks like it has broken off of something. It also has a repair with silver solder. Under the chin it looks like it was put together with two parts you can see the seam. Anyone know what it is or used for?

I think if it were a tool for logging to move logs the narl would be on the other side toward the hole. I looked at some sites for logging tools and could not find anything like it.

farrow line maker ?--by pulling it --you would make a line for others to plant seeds in

the deer might be part of a cane handle --fancy type

It looks like a cane handle to me too. :icon_thumleft:

As far as the iron piece is concerned, could it be part of an andiron? Breezie

I thought of that also Breezie, but the hole is the same size and shape as the other hoe heads that we found. I think it has something to do with plantation life or rice fields.

Oh, yeah, I see now. Yes, it looks as if it was some type of farming tool like the others. Hopefully someone will be able to ID the name of it. Interesting finds, Breezie

I agree with it being some sort of farm tool. If someone has an early Sears and Roebuck reproduction catalog you may find it in there. I used to have one of these catalogs and they are great for identifying pieces.

I have one, and will look as soon as I get a few free minutes.

My guess is that it isn't a tool at all, but rather an early fireplace crane hook. It would slip over the crane in a fireplace with the hook pointed upwards on which a cast iron pot was hung.

I think "creskol" has it right. A hook for a pot on a fire place seems correct. And I guess the pewter deer head works for a top of a cane. Thanks for all you help.

I disagree. I don't know what it is, but I know fireplace stuff pretty well. :read2:

I think the rusty piece is an early horse drawn version of this ripper plow. I can't find a pic but maybe someone else can get lucky or knows a site to ID it.

I have seen this item on a handle and when i picked it up it slid down and pinched a blood blister. I don't know if it was supposed to be loose on the handle.
And i don't know for sure what it was.

the iron thingy is a log roller called a "cant grip" used em before in the 60's
used to roll falling trees so you could cut the branches off before dragging the logs
the design has not changed that much on years so its very hard to date

i agree with the deer part could be from a cane but the other i don't beleive is a peavy(log rolling tool) the hook end would be facing the other way if it was

Something like a "hay crook"? Maybe with a short wooden handle instead of one piece iron...

The piece has a lot of rust on it but my question, is it sharp anywhere?

It looks as if it may be sharp where you think a wood handle would go. Maybe we have it backwards.
