What am I doing wrong?

In heavy clay in eastern tennessee, is that the kind of details you mean? It's in my backyard and I am completely new to this, so operator error would not surprise me lol.

Hey dinnerdigger....There are a lot of deposits of gold, silver and iron all over the place. Before you dig check the area for Black Sand. If it is bare dirt you will see the black sand where the rain water has ran. Back Sand has some magnet and iron in their make up. Micro-Gold and Silver tend to be in the mix. Before digging I always kick the spot with my foot and recheck it for a signal. A lot of the signals go away....Art

Have you practiced with coins you've buried? If not put one down in the same location where you've been getting the signals, just an inch or two and check it with the settings you have been using. If that works ok then risk a good spade full of dirt on one of those "false" hits and sift it looking for rusty tin, bits of wire, small nails etc. Sometimes these things crumble while you dig and you lose contact. Don't give up we've all been where you're at, Dinnerdigger.

We could use more details like what detector are you using and the settings. Try turning down your sensitivity to less than half. How does it respond to coins on the surface. Are you discriminating out iron?

sounds like your having trouble pinpointing and/or locating targets..Where you located?

Just outside of Maryville.

I have been using the all metal mode and my machine is a BH3300. Perhaps I am just not digging deep enough...

DD,

is it a new machine for you?

Have your tried a test garden?

Welcome to the board and hope we will
be seeing some finds soon ;)

yep new to me - the whole thing. I'm going to do the test garden thing for a few days I think, then try again. ;D

BTW what is hot rock?

A hot rock is a mineralized rock that gives off a signal like metal. I have found some, but it seems like coal also does the same thing to my machine.

For what it's worth (not much) I've found that trash targets, e.g. rusty galvanized steel, are much harder to pinpoint than good targets. I usually end up widening the hole to about 8"-10" to find a rusty galvanized nail. It's never where I thought it was.
