Not old, looks like a 25 or 32 Cal. center-fire round (just a guess though), could be 70 years or a little older. And yeah, it was a dud. You can see the spot that the firing pin or hammer struck it. What does the head stamp say?

Size comparision with you holding it in your hand and the shape of the bullet I say it is most likely a 9mm. The bottom of the bullet casing should have a caliber marking stating what caliber it is.

I can`t see a mark or any numbers on the casing,it is kind of corroded. The reason I thought it was a older bullet is because it has a ring around the bullet where the brass casing meets the lead. Also the bullet looks kind of crude and not uniform. Thanks for your help.jeff

NOT a 9mm. At least not a 9mm Luger(parabellum). That bullet is rimmed so it was made for a revolver most likely(small size, rimmed) or even an early tube fed rifle. Maybe a 38 S&W short or a 32 S&W. Maybe something more exotic.
Need the stamp on the bottom to be sure.

My guess is .38 S&W. Made for .38 cal. S&W pocket revolver and any number of cheap copies. The reason it has a circle around where the bullet meets the case is so it can be crimped into the case. Made from about early 1920s until now. The geography and topography of the location where it was found may be a hint as to its age, but it would still be a guess. Monty

Probably a .38 S&W as Monty said, but some precise measurements would help. See if you can get some calipers and compare with these drawings.

Well you could just get some different caliber bullets of what you think it is and match it up if you have to measuring devices.
