My son and I got out in the backyard for a quick hunt yesterday before supper and as usual, he gives me a good whupping. I found an old brass hose sprayer and he found this. Looks pretty old, but just how old, I don't know. Can they be dated from the shape?

He could at least get excited about it. He just started detecting, and I'm the one all fired up over his find. Kids...

It is a shingling hatchet. Looks like it has been in the ground a while. Maybe early to mid 20th C...

I'd put a handle on it and use it. My best/favorite axe is made from a dug axe head.

I figured it was a roofing hatchet, but was thinking (or hoping) more 1850 than 1950. By then, I thought the head of the hammer had shifted upward more in line with the top. Thanks for your help though.
