West Seattle store clerk to would-be robbers: 'My gun is bigger

SEATTLE -- It wasn't quite bringing a knife to a gun fight, but two would-be robbers in West Seattle found themselves quickly over matched Saturday night.

Robert Moore was ringing-up a customer around 10 p.m. at the Morning Star Mini Mart, located in the 8800 block of 9th Ave SW, when two men entered the store wearing ski masks. One of the men stayed near the entrance of the store while the other attempted robber approached the counter and pointed a gun at Moore.

"This is a robbery," Moore said the man told him.

Moore said the attempted robber's gun didn't look real.

"I looked at his gun and said 'I have a bigger one than you do,' " he said.

Moore then turned to reach for his own gun and that's when the attempted robbers took off in a white SUV with dark markings toward the rear of the driver's side and a sun roof.

Seattle Police searched the area but couldn't locate any suspects.

"It's a good place and Robert's so great to the locals and stuff like that," said customer Rich Morris. "It's just a shame when people get desperate like that."

Something similar happened in the early 1980s. I was working for a convenience store chain and was at the stores a lot. We had one little woman (30ish at the time) and her older husband operating a station on the I35 service road in Waco, Texas. This store was not open for public entrance. It only had beer, cold drinks, cigs, oil, etc. that was handed thru a window to the customer. As I parked at the side of the store one afternoon, I noticed a man literally running away from the window. The lady opened the door when I knocked with a gun in her hand. She didn't seem very excited! I asked what happened. She said that a man walked up to the window asked for a pack of cigarettes. When she reached over to her left to get the cigs, he put a gun (a little cheap revolver, probably a .22 calibre 'Saturday night special'), at the window entrance and told her to put all of the money in a bag and give it to him. She just reached under the counter like she was getting a bag to put the money in. Instead, she cocked the hammer back on a .30 calibre revolver, put the gun where he could see it, and said "OK, you pull your trigger and I'll pull mine!" He ran!

I still remember the "shotgun squads" that a couple of Texas cities employed back in the 60's. Sit in the back and come out blazing when needed. Took a bite out of crime and more fun than the start of hunting season. No warning put your hands up, no Miranda crap, just tag em and bag em...
