Cartersville, GA
I came out with a bag full of old beer cans, and other assorted junk. I know this site has to have something and I have been to several areas of it but I cannot find the right spot. Maybe someone here can help me out. I am talking about the area on Cass-White Rd where some of Hood's men got into it with McCooks cavalry.

What happened was Gen. Johnston fooled Sherman into thinking that the main Confederate force had moved south from Adairsville to Kingston by forcing a tight march to Cassville by the main army and a wide trail to Kingston by all the wagons and support etc. Sherman took the bait and moved his main force south to Kingston and a smaller army to Cassville. Johnston placed Polks corps on the hills just south of Two Run creek at Cassville and planned to attack as the Federals crossed the creek. Hood was sent with his corps up Spring Creek rd, just to the east of the road that the Federals would be marching on. Hood was to attack the flank when Polk's corps initiated the frontal attack. HOWEVER... McCook and his union cavalry just happened to be headed west along Cass-Canton rd, (now old Cass-White rd) just as Hoods corps were moving north into position. They bumped into the end of Hood's column and immediately attacked. Hood over-reacted, disobeyed orders and reversed fronts with hlaf of his force. The men Hood sent to attack McCook moved west along a ridge that runs parallel to Cass-White rd, Cass-White rd runs right along the southern side of the ridge. At Brown loop rd as stream passes through a gap in the ridge and it is here that Hood's men turned south, through the pass and attacked McCooks cavalry. McCooks papers say that he was ordered to turn and drive the Confederate force back into the pass and he states that the Confederate force was along the road there. McCook also had an artillary unit with him that he placed on a hilltop. McCook was south of Cass-White Rd and Hood was in the gap, or came through the gap north of Cass-White rd.
I have obtained permission to hunt the property on the south side, at rhe creek/pass anda 16 acre property in the pass on the north side.
My problem is that I have been hunting both places and I am finding squat... nada.

Is anyone here familiar with this area or does anyone have any advice? There is a little info in the official records and it's pretty much what i've stated here but if anyone has experience with this kind of thing...figuring out where to look at a site i'd really appreciate any help if you have access to maps or other info. I'll keep looking but I just can't figure out why I am finding nothing at all.

I have aerial photos etc but they don't really show anything.

I'm hoping someone here may be familiar with the area or with what went on.

Thanks,

Julien

Jbow,
I think I have/had a map that has the approx locations of where the troops might have been. Let me get up in the attic and I'll see what I can find.
I'll let you know something in the morning.

I found a map, it may help you out. It looks like the rail road is going to be a good point to start from. You need to find where the old Cassville station was located back in the day. Just to make sure your on the right hill/gap. What are we talking about here about 1864ish. It sounds like to me that the Gap with the creek running down the middle is the spot.

Good luck

Yeah... this gap is really the only place it could be but it it a flat creek bottom on both sides of the road. On the west, or Cassville, side of the gap there is a fairly steep, round hill. On the other side it is higher ground, very brushy. From the records. McCook had passed the gap and was toward Cassville when he first attacked Hood's column. Then he moved back toward the gap to face the threat there. That make's me think that the activity would have been more to the west but really, who knows. I'm going to keep looking until I find either the site or someone local who know's where it is.

Thanks... I sent you a PM.

Jbow, I know you're fustrated but the hunt is what it's all about. That detective work will pay off. Just hang in there and you'll find what you seek. HH and I envy you having access to the location!

My friend Steve has hunted this site before. He said that another MD cleaned out the site 20 years ago, and then used a shot gun to foil any MDer from finding anything after that. He also mentioned that he had trouble detecting there because of the "hot rocks," or rocks that are heavily mineralized. Anyway, he mentioned that the area where there was stuff to be found was located on a hill above Cassville Cemetary, where there was a trench. He said that his friend found a whole lot of stuff then, and that others had also metal detected that area heavily at that time, too. I actually lived in Cartersville for a wonderful year, and loved the place. I have even been through Cassville once. I did not MD then, but could tell that there was a lot of history there. Maybe you will get lucky and find another area to hunt. 20 years ago I was a freshman in high school.

Wasn't there a Cherokee settlement up there, and what about the old townsite of Eurharlee? There is still a covered bridge there, and also some old buildings. If you could get an old map, and permission, maybe you could MD over there. It is just a few minutes outside of Cartersville, as you probably know.
