Went bike riding in east tennessee today, ran across an old operation of some sort. 1 inch cable all over the ground. It wrapped around the pullys and went straight up the mountain. Any Idea?

Could be a log skidding job with a Jammer. The brake drum would be consistent with the machine and the cable would be the line used for skidding logs up steep inclines to the trucks like the old wreck pictured. Wish I could find you some pictures. High Lead log yarders used today in my part of the country have evolved to do the work today in the mountains. Great pictures, Redloh.

Can not tell by the photos. some sort of mill set up it seems. The name of the place might be a clue. Can not believe there is no bullet holes in the truck door. Must be a difficult place to get into.

Looks like a cable hoist for a deep mine not a strip mine. Your third pic is the back of a rock truck used in mining . Second pic looks like about a 1956 mack truck . Probably a coal mine . If you look around on the ground you will find what they were mining.

The surrounding area is well known for coal mining, so I'd say that is a good guess. The next time I'm in the area I'll look around and see if I can locate the actual mine. Thanks for all the guesses.

Emeralds? No wait that's the Carolinas.

Does that truck still have a plate on it by any chance? Maybe you could track down the owner and ask what they were mining for.

That's some very heavy duty steel I see there on the ground. I would be guessing quarry if there was a big dug hole anywhere close by. Monty

Sand mtn................ I know that place..Grow some good taters up there. You are on the Tennessee side? I remember an old sign long ago at the bottom of that mtn on the Ala side near I think it was called duggards slaughter house. about warning being caught on that mtn by the setting sun. Yep Sand mtn Tn side all coal pits and strip pits. Might find some fossils up there. We still get the coal for my brothers forge when we are up there.
Cool.
