Looks like N word Tom from Huck Finn.

Anyways, it looks more like a civilian than a soldier to me.

hair off the top of hat might be a giveaway
I noticed that on the new pics, but what nationality does it represent?

Pretty sure it's not Japanese. Could be "sea" related. The "clothing" is very similar to that of the mid 1700's to 1800's sailor's clothes. OR - something related to the cotton trade on the Mississippi way back when. The way the "stance" looks - it could have been a depiction of a dock worker with his foot upon a bale...

Just shootin' out some ideas... :icon_scratch:

And the "hair" off the top of the hat would be a plume of some sort. Almost like a fez. Folks wore all sorts of crazy "headgear" back then. Come to think of it, they do today as well... :D

Still looks like a very small style conscious lawn jockey to me. The hat and hair thing is pretty different though.

any idea on what he might be worth?
It appears broken so maybe not much. We havent IDed it yet but it is an interesting piece of Americana.
He may even have been holding a rifle, we dont know. He appears to have painted dark skin and negro face features. I do think the key to identification may be the unusual hair and hat. Can I see a closeup of his shoes?

This was my first impression as there were a couple in my home town when I was growing up. Obviously they aren't up any more but I do recall small statues (3-4 foot tall) in this exact pose.

reality sucks sometimes.
